Systems Thinking when Looking Back to Look Forward

Systems Thinking means, for us today, all of the parts working together. In a school community, there are a lot of parts, and a lot of people that all need to work well together in order to reach the ultimate goal. All learning leads to being the best version of ourselves. I repeat: All learning.

In this 3 part series, I’m asking you to examine just three systems that can support healthy communities of professional practice:

1. Care

2. Communication

3. Collaboration

System 2: Communication

Many of us do not manage our time well. Ouch. I know that hurts. But it’s true. We lose a lot of valuable time discussing items that don’t merit discussion. Consider this: What does your team need to improve your information-passing protocol, and what items are you shaping, molding, revising, or creating that require a discussion of all your brains to make them collaborative and clear?

Keep that notebook nearby. Here are a few more questions to consider:

●       What are the community agreements and protocols for collaborative conversations?

●       What are the agreements for discussing topics that invite different perspectives?

●       What are the agreements to having difficult conversations?

●       What are the agreements for giving and receiving feedback as an entire community?

●       What are the community agreements for communicating with caregivers?

●       What are the community agreements for discussing student growth and progress?

●       What do I need in order to feel successful?

●       What can I contribute to others in the community?
